Diane Keaton was a beloved figure across the world, but she was also a devoted and dedicated mother to her two children.
The Oscar-winning actress welcomed two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, via adoption when she was in her 50s in 1996 and 2001, respectively. Throughout her prolific career, Keaton maintained a close relationship with both of her children and often brought them to various events.
“I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” she told Ladies’ Home Journal in 2008. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist. It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”
Keaton died on Oct. 11, 2025, at 79 years old. In the year since her death, both of her children have shared tributes honoring their late mother — which have included sweet throwback moments, memorable travel experiences and exciting milestones.

Keaton raised both of her children in Hollywood but mostly kept them out of the spotlight.
“They have no interest in what I do, which I think is very healthy. We live a relatively normal — well, sort of normal — life,” she told PEOPLE in 2007.
In 2013, Dexter shared a sweet throwback picture of having “pool time with mommy” as a young girl.

Duke was born on Feb. 8, 2000, and Keaton adopted him the following year.
In October 2026, Duke posted a picture of him as a young child dressed up as a pumpkin as his mother smiled beside him.

Seeing Wicked in 2005

Although Keaton mostly raised her children in private, she occasionally brought them out for special moments.
The Annie Hall actress took Dexter for a mother-daughter date to the afterparty for the premiere of the Broadway musical Wicked in Los Angeles, on June 22, 2005. Dexter and Keaton were joined by the actress’ longtime friend and colleague, Carol Kane.

Dexter joked about her mom’s free spirit by sharing a childhood picture with Keaton, her brother and their nanny on vacation.
“I don’t have any current photos of my mom and I, so here’s a throwback with my brother and our wonderful nanny at the time Sandra! Also, peep my mom not wearing shoes, which is not out of the ordinary for her. 😁😂🤗💕,” she captioned the group photo in January 2021.

In April 2009, Keaton and her younger child spent some quality mother-son time together at a Los Angeles Lakers game.
The two were photographed cheering on the basketball team from their floor seats. At one point, Duke, who was wearing a Kobe Bryant jersey, even got a close-up shot of the late NBA legend.

Dexter posted throwback photos of her as a child jumping off a lifeguard chair on a beach while her mother watched on.
“Jumpin’ into the week like … My mom and I have always loved going on adventures together,” she captioned the post in June 2023. “From strolls on the beach to walking around a new neighborhood. I love spending time with my mom. We always have an amazing time together. I love my mom ❤️.”

Both of Keaton’s children stepped out to celebrate their mother’s success and legacy as she accepted the 45th American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award at the Dolby Theatre in L.A. on June 8, 2017.
The family of three smiled wide and posed for pictures before Keaton shared a few words about the momentous occasion.
“I just want to cry, that’s all I want to do. It’s just been too much, too great for me, and now I have this speech,” she emotionally shared, wile later adding, “I just wanted to say to all of you, you’ve just been a great audience and my kids are here and my family and my friends are here.”

While Keaton was known for her decades of acting work, she also held a special place in her heart for several nonprofits.
The Something’s Gotta Give actress seemingly passed along her passion for giving back to her children. In April 2018, Keaton and Dexter attended The People Concern’s Celebrating Change Gala at Casa Vertigo in L.A.

Dexter announced that she was engaged to White in November 2020. The following May, some of her loved ones celebrated Dexter with a bridal shower.
“Showered with love by my family and friends!” she wrote. “I’m so thankful for everyone who made yesterday so special! 😇🕊🤍 HUGE thanks to Marla and Stephanie for throwing an amazing shower!”
Later that month, Dexter thanked her mom for her constant love in a Mother’s Day post.
“Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!” she wrote on her Instagram Stories under a photo of her and Keaton against a black and white background. “Thank you for everything you have done and continued to do for me. @diane_keaton I love you momma!”

Finding the “perfect wedding gown”

Ahead of her daughter’s nuptials, Keaton joined Dexter to go wedding dress shopping at California-based bridal shop Saint Clark Bridal Suite.
The shop posted pictures of Dexter and Keaton smiling with the associates and also included shots of Dexter wearing a white lace gown alongside her husband, brother and mother. The store shared the snaps to mourn Keaton’s death in October 2025.
“We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of the iconic Diane Keaton,” they captioned the photos. “A legend on screen and a light in person, Diane once came into our boutique with her daughter to help choose the perfect wedding gown. From the moment she walked in, she didn’t feel like a celebrity; she felt like an old friend. Wholesome, vibrant, full of color and warmth, she made everyone around her feel instantly at ease.”
The store added that Keaton’s “presence was magnetic, her humor effortless, and her love for her daughter so beautifully evident.”

Welcoming a son-in-law

In June 2021, Keaton’s family expanded when Dexter wed White in California.
She posted several photos of the family celebrating the nuptials — including some pictures of her and Keaton going all out on the dance floor.

Once again, Dexter and Duke showed their support for their mom by attending her Hand & Footprint Ceremony at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre on Aug. 11, 2022.
Keaton spoke to PEOPLE about the special occasion and when asked what it meant to have her kids there, she simply replied, “everything.”
“I love them,” she said.

Honoring their mother

On Oct. 11, 2025, Keaton died after a bacterial pneumonia infection.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the family shared in a statement at the time.
A source later told PEOPLE that Keaton’s health “declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.”
“In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening,” the insider added.
Around six months after losing her mother, Dexter posted a Mother’s Day tribute on Instagram where she included a picture of them hugging on her wedding day and a throwback photo.
“First Mother’s Day without you,” Dexter captioned the post . “I miss you more than words can say. Missing her voice, her hugs, her presence, and everything that made her home 🤍. I love you, Mom 🤍.”

Remembering their mom one year after her death

Both Duke and Dexter paid tribute to their late mother on the first anniversary of her death on Oct. 11, 2026.
“One year without you, mom 🤍,” Dexter captioned a picture of her and Keaton on her wedding day. “It somehow feels like yesterday and forever ago all at once. I’m still trying to get used to a world where I can’t call you, have you there for a hug, or go on adventures with you. It’s the everyday moments that remind me just how much I wish you were still here.”
Duke, who keeps much of his life private, also honored his mom by posting throwback photos with her — including one of them on a boat with a friend.
“I love you Mom ❤️ Thinking of you every day ♾️,” he wrote.
