A 20-year-old bicyclist was saved after she became stuck underwater as she tried to cross a flooded bridge in Arizona with her family.
The daring rescue happened in Sabino Canyon in Tucson just before 8 a.m. local time on Thursday, Aug. 13, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
“A family of three attempted to cross a flooded bridge on bicycles,” police said. “During the crossing, a 20-year-old-female fell from her bicycle and became trapped underwater.”
Her family and bystanders then jumped in to help the woman, who remained underwater for several minutes.
The victim was eventually pulled from the water and given CPR until she regained consciousness.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS affiliate KOLD that the force of the water carried the woman through a tunnel and ejected her roughly 100 feet downstream.

“Deputies arrived and assisted the subject out of the drainage,” authorities said in their statement. “Two patients were transported to a local hospital by Rural Metro Fire Department and are reported to be in stable condition.”
Although her story had a happy ending, Nanos had a word of caution for anybody attempting to cross a flooded bridge.
“Don’t do it,” he said.
