A new store is slated for the Chicago suburbs: Amazon is expected to come to the Chicagoland area, according to local planning documents, and will bring customers a chance to shop from the company in person.

The Village of Orland Park, located about 30 miles from downtown Chicago, posted on its Facebook earlier this month that the tech giant would bring a brick-and-mortar store to the area. "This first of its kind retail store by Amazon will offer a range of products from groceries to general merchandise and will not be an Amazon warehouse or distribution center," the post stated.

Amazon confirmed in an email statement to USA TODAY that the new store is coming, and the retail location aims to make it convenient for customers to shop a range of items, including groceries, household essentials and more.

“We regularly test new experiences designed to make customers’ lives better and easier every day, including physical stores," Amazon's statement said. "The site in question is our planned location for a new concept that we think customers will be excited about.”

What to know about the Amazon store

While there are not a lot of details about the store presently, Jan. 6 planning documents from Orland Park show the site of the building is set to be around 35 acres. The building is slated to be located next to a Costco, with the proposal describing it as one-story, 225,000 square-foot commercial retail building served by 837 accessory parking spaces and seven loading docks.

"The proposed development will also take into account consumers’ increased desire for online ordering across the retail landscape," project documents state. "Customers will have the ability to receive deliveries direct from this location and the building and site plan will have dedicated space for third-party delivery drivers to improve safety and meet the demands of modern online retail without sacrificing the in-store customer experience."

The site plans also tout the possibility of dining locations for prepared food to be sold on site. The details were approved by the village's planning commission last week but will need approval from the Orland Park Committee of the Whole and the Board of Trustees that meet later this month to progress further.

Amazon has opened stores and dabbled in in-person shopping before, including with Amazon Fresh grocery stores, the company's purchase of Whole Foods nearly a decade ago and the cashier-less Amazon Go convenience stores.

It's not clear when the store in the Chicagoland area might open. Renderings of the store show it appearing similar in shape and structure to a large supermarket, with multiple entrances and parking lots accompanying the site.
