Beau Bridges is sharing some of the first concrete details about Matlockās third season.
The Fabulous Baker Boys star, who portrays the duplicitous managing partner Howard āSeniorā Markston on the legal drama, shared an update on the CBS series during a conversation with Entertainment Weekly that was primarily focused on his work on ABCās R.J. Decker.
āIām going back to work on Matlock in December,ā Bridges reveals. āI was really fortunate that these schedules worked out so I could also do R.J. Decker and Matlock. Iām looking forward to getting back to work on that show. Thatās a great group of actors and a wonderful crew.ā
Additionally, EW has learned that Matlock season 3 is currently in production.
Since Matlock season 2 ended with Seniorās arrest for his role in a major cover-up that could have led to an earlier end to the opioid epidemic, Bridges isnāt sure how his character will factor into the next season ā but he thinks that Senior will end up back in a courtroom.

āI donāt really know whatās happening with Senior, my character there, other than heās in prison right now,ā he says, laughing. āBut I think Iām getting out, and I think thereās probably gonna be a court case.ā
However, he clarifies that he doesnāt have any final scripts yet. āJennie Urman, our wonderful showrunner, she plays it pretty close to the vest,ā he says. āSo I wonāt be knowing whatās going to be happening with her probably till I get the script, and I donāt have it yet.ā
Bridges also shares his admiration for the showās lead, Kathy Bates, who portrays Madeline āMattyā Matlock. āI just love working with Kathy,ā he says. āSheās something else, you know? And she really carries that whole team of actors on her shoulders. And she does it effortlessly.ā

The finale of Matlockās second season closed the book on the WellBrexa coverup, with all of the Jacobson Moore law firmās senior partners being arrested for their involvement in the coverup. The episode ended with Matty and Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall) seemingly confirming that they intend to set out on their own and become partners in a new law firm, Lawrence and Matlock.
Very little is known about Matlockās third season, but Urman said she personally asked CBS to adjust the schedule so that the series would return for a midseason premiere in 2027 rather than starting with the usual fall TV broadcast season in September or October.
āI just feel like we had so much stuff to think about because we really landed the plane on this and we really thought that was important because we didnāt want to keep dragging out the same story and the characters have to get to someplace real emotionally,ā Urman told TV Insider. āWhen we took this two-hour finale and really paid a lot of things off, what came with that was Iām going to need time after that to really build the architecture so that we have it for the next seasons.ā

After the conclusion of season 2, Urman and two other Matlock executive producers, Jeffrey Lieber and Nicki Renna, were named as defendants alongside CBS Studios in a lawsuit from John H. Lowe III, a writer who worked on the first season of the show. Loweās complaint accused the trio of fostering a hostile work environment and alleged that they made racist and sexually explicit comments in the workplace. CBS Studios denied the allegations and stood by Urman, Lieber, and Renna, who also all denied Loweās accusations in signed declarations reviewed by EW and claimed that Lowe invented the instances of alleged inappropriate behavior outlined in his complaint.

The show also faced behind-the-scenes drama during the production of the second season when David Del Rio, the actor who played Billy Martinez on the series, was fired after CBS investigated an alleged incident involving him. The network conducted a supplemental investigation into the matter and stood by its decision to part ways with the actor; Del Rio then initiated arbitration against CBS Studios a few weeks later.
Matlock will return on CBS in 2027.
