Brittany Snow is sharing how she relates to her character on The Hunting Wives, Sophie O'Neil

Snow tells PEOPLE that they are both shy, which she admits she doesn't know "how to overcome"

She also teases the upcoming second season of her hit Netflix series following its dramatic season 1 finale

Brittany Snow is revealing one of her personality traits that may surprise fans.

The actress, 40, caught up with PEOPLE at Disney’s inaugural Toast to Television event in Los Angeles on Monday, April 27, as she teased season 2 of The Hunting Wives and opened up about stepping back into the role of Sophie O’Neil.

“There’s definitely some different storylines that happen,” Snow says. “I think that we get a little bit more into the intricacies of background and backstory, the relationships deepen. There’s a lot more backstabbing, a lot more manipulation. And I think something that’s different for Sophie is she sort of breaks out of this shell that she was in season 1. And now she is just cracking in every way — an exposed nerve, to put it in a sense.”

Snow adds that she always looks for ways to connect with the characters she plays. When it comes to Sophie, their similarities weren't hard to find.

“It’s hard to be a woman that unleashes that part of yourself where you can say whatever and do whatever and live completely free, and Margo sort of brings that out of her,” she says, referring to Malin Akerman’s Margo Banks. “I relate to Sophie because sometimes I’m a little shy and I need to break free.”

She adds, “I think people think sometimes that I’m a certain way and it’s just because I’m in my head and I’m shy. So I don’t know how you overcome it. If you have any idea, please tell me.”

The Hunting Wives follows Sophie as she moves to Texas and joins an elite group of women led by Margo, with whom she falls into complicated yet passionate relationship. In September, Netflix announced that the show was renewed for a second season, shortly after its debut in July brought in 20 million views in its first five weeks.

While season 1 was based on May Cobb's book of the same name, season 2 will go off an original script. It's set to pick up with Sophie and Margo "on the outs," per an official logline, "but soon enough, old secrets and new foes force them back together. As they play their dangerous games, the question arises: Are they the hunters or the hunted?"

In addition to Snow and Akerman, several other cast members are confirmed to return, including Jamie Ray Newman as Callie, Dermot Mulroney as Jed, Evan Jonigkeit as Graham and George Ferrier as Brad.
