President Donald Trump gave a curious version of Kimberly Guilfoyle’s place in his orbit this week, highlighting her former marriage to California Governor Gavin Newsom while saying nothing about her four-year engagement to his own son. The omission drew attention because Guilfoyle spent years as one of the most visible figures in the Trump family’s inner circle.

According to the Daily Beast, Trump made the remarks two days after Guilfoyle lost her post in a televised ouster. Newsmax asked the president whether he would pardon Guilfoyle if prosecutors pursued her over alleged misconduct. “I don’t want to think about it,” Trump replied. The president then described his history with Guilfoyle in loose terms, recalling her marriage to Gavin Newsom but omitting her past engagement to Donald Trump Jr.

Trump said he felt disappointed by what he had read but had not spoken to Guilfoyle. I’ve known her over the years. I’ve known her for many years. She was married to Gavin Newscum. And I’ve known her for years, not that well, but I’ve known her.” Donald Trump also praised her work abroad, calling her “the toast of the town over in Greece” and saying she “was doing a very good job as the, you know, ambassador to Greece.”

The comments sit awkwardly beside Trump’s earlier praise of Kimberly Guilfoyle. At a Greek Independence Day event at the White House in March, he called her “a person I know very, very well” and “an inspiration to a lot of people, especially if you happen to be Greek.” Further adding, “Kimberly Guilfoyle has been my friend for a long time. I love calling her ‘Kimber-lay.'” He also celebrated her 54th birthday in 2023.

Once misconduct allegations surfaced, including claims she solicited $100,000 for political favors, Trump reframed the relationship. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, he said, “She was not a member of my family. She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago.” Kimberly Guilfoyle and Donald Trump Jr. began dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2020 before calling it off in 2024.
