A question about balancing motherhood with a demanding government job became the most memorable moment of Donald Trump’s new Press Secretary Katie Zacharia’s first White House briefing. The new press secretary was discussing family life when she stumbled over a word, corrected herself, and appeared visibly embarrassed by the slip.
Katie Zacharia’s husband mix-up draws attention during her first briefing
Katie Zacharia had been explaining how she manages raising four children while working in the administration. She credited her husband and described their family as a busy household, with children ages 12, 10, 8 and 6, including three boys. She also explained that her husband and children had joined her in Washington to celebrate several family birthdays together. “We have four kids ranging from [ages] 12, 10, 8 and 6 — three of them are boys, so we have a handful,” she said.
Then came the verbal mix-up. “The idea of not spending evenings with my kid, kids is completely unacceptable,” she said before referring to “my president” and immediately correcting herself with “my husband.” Zacharia recognized the mistake, nervously called it “a good one,” and continued speaking before abruptly ending the briefing.

The moment stood out during an appearance that had already attracted criticism. Zacharia spent about 14 minutes at the podium, relying heavily on prepared remarks, looking down at her notes and occasionally stumbling over her delivery.
Behind the scenes, Zacharia’s first outing reportedly drew a much colder assessment. An unnamed White House official told MS NOW that stepping up to the podium is no easy task, but argued that Zacharia had stumbled out of the gate and would need to sharpen her performance fast. “Getting behind the podium is tough, but she got off on the wrong foot. She needs to get much better fast,” the official said.
Otherwise, the official suggested, she could rival Anthony Scaramucci’s brief stint as Trump’s communications director, which ended after just 10 days during the president’s first term. Zacharia took over from Karoline Leavitt, who departed the administration in August to devote more time to her family.
