Chuck Russell and Arnold Schwarzenegger were on the same page when it came to Eraser.
The 1996 film brought the director and the action star together, with the goal of making a smart and sophisticated action classic. Russell recently spoke with PEOPLE for the film's 30th anniversary, revealing what he had in mind as he was building the cast who would support Schwarzenegger in the film.
"For me, the key cast members were definitely Vanessa Williams and James Caan. The concept for me, is bringing Jimmy Caan after his incredible career at that point. It really started with Michael Mann's Thief for me and his work in The Godfather, which really made him famous.
Russell felt confident that Caan could "challenge Arnold's performance."
"In a case like Arnold, you know you're going to get vintage Arnold, but I wanted to see how far we could take his performance playing against someone like James Caan, and I was delighted with the outcome. Jimmy was excited to work with him."

He continued, "We all know Arnold's a competitive champion, and that's the way we both looked at the film. For me, it was a challenge that came after True Lies and the Terminators. But the point was to make his best film to date."

"The studio felt the same way, weirdly. I didn't know what they were talking about at the time, but they said they wanted one more great Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster. Everything we did was intended to deliver."
As for Williams, "I wanted the smarter female protagonist. I didn't want a damsel in distress. And Vanessa Williams, she's got brains and courage. I didn't want somebody he simply had to save. She was somebody who got in trouble trying to unveil corruption in her character's work. And just seeing Vanessa read with Arnold, there wasn't really a second choice after that."

The film's success speaks to "the magic of filmmaking," according to Russell, who continued, "Not to be corny about it, but that's the one thing that is as a filmmaker. I don't think you ever get over it."
"We put our hearts and minds and everything we've got into these movies and then to see an audience respond to it while I sit in the back is really an amazing experience. And that film, I always have the global audience in mind and that film did well internationally. So I was pleased. Everyone did a lot of work and I feel responsible that we make a success out of it," he continued.
"This is my straight-up action adventure movie. I did Scorpion King after this with Dwayne Johnson, which was magical and imaginative. This was my opportunity to take a straight-up action picture with Arnold Schwarzenegger and make it as great a movie as I could. So for me, it tapped my straight action, my interest in making a great studio-scale action picture."
Eraseris now available on 4K UHD.
