“I was a child when I first read The Magician's Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life," Gerwig, 42, said in a statement.
“I didn't know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart," the Barbie director continued. "It is the honor of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me.”

Lewis' novel The Magician's Nephew was published on May 2, 1955 and was the sixth published of the author's seven-book series. The book is set a 1,000 years before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and focuses on the lion Aslan's creation of the magical world of Narnia. The previous Narnia film franchise only adapted The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Ciarán Hinds, Susan Wokoma, David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith will also star in the film, which is helmed by Gerwig as writer, director and producer. Members of the C. S. Lewis Estate are also producers on the film.
Andrew Wyatt, who is co-writing music for the film with Mark Ronson, teased to PEOPLE that Narnia's development was in “very, very early days” in December 2025.
“I think a lot of people are going to be happy, I think people are going to really dig it,” the musician, 54, said. “I know the story and I love the story. And Greta of course is [doing it] in her own way and it's going to be different."
Narnia: The Magician's Nephew is in theaters Feb. 12, 2027. IMAX sneak previews will begin on Feb. 10, 2027.
