Guy Fieri is revealing Bobby Flay’s memorable reaction to his bold style.
The Tournament of Champions host shared the story during a visit to Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, where he reflected on how his signature look was a first for the Food Network when he became a celebrity chef.
“Spiky blonde hair and tattoos and jewelry, that was nothing that was on the Food Network when I got there,” Fieri, 58, recalled. “You know, I remember Bobby Flay said to me one time, he says, ‘So are you a chef or a jeweler?’”
However, the Flavortown Food Fight star added that he recently had the chance to turn the funny question back on Flay during last month’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival, when they attended an event at Miami hotspot Joe’s Stone Crab.
“Bobby holds this really cool luncheon all the chefs come to, and I see Bobby wearing a big gold chain,” Fieri said. “And I've never seen Bobby ever wear jewelry. And I said, I just had to say it. So I said, ‘Bobby, let me just ask a question. So now, are you a chef or are you a jeweler?’ He goes, ‘All right, I deserve that.’”
In January, Fieri debuted an unexpected new look in an Instagram video as he celebrated his birthday.
The culinary star sported an unusually conservative ensemble that included a checkered button-down shirt and belted khaki trousers. His facial hair was shaven off, and he traded in his spiky blonde locks for a neatly parted brown hairdo.

“Hey there! After so many years of celebrating my birthday as Guy, I figured this year I’d celebrate it as just a guy. Happy birthday to me!” he said, then leaning over to blow out the candles on his cake.

He captioned the post simply, “New Year. New Guy. New Look.”
His son Hunter had a playful take on the businesslike look, writing, “Dad… when did you start selling insurance? 😂”
The toned-down makeover was later revealed to be for a Super Bowl commercial for Bosch.
Fieri addressed his iconic look during an interview with PEOPLE last July, revealing how long it actually takes to perfect his hairstyle.
“Everybody asks, ‘How long does it take to do your hair?’ It takes …,” he said before rubbing his hands back and forth on his head three times. “That’s how long.”
In 2022, the Guys Grocery Games star told PEOPLE that his hairdo and tattoos were not a TV stunt.
"People think I got tattoos and bleached my hair because I was going to be on TV,” he said. “I made those great decisions before I got here."
