Pat McAfee is known for bringing energy and humor to ESPN’s College GameDay, but his latest comments have landed him in hot water with some college football fans.
After admitting he knew nothing about Sacramento State while making an underdog pick, McAfee faced criticism from viewers who believe the show should pay more attention to programs outside the Big Ten and SEC.
However, media analyst Jimmy Traina believes McAfee is being judged unfairly.

The backlash also came around the time Kirk Herbstreit appeared unsure whether Boise State and Fresno State were conference opponents before correctly identifying them as Pac-12 members.
On the “Traina Thoughts” Podcast, Traina questioned why McAfee was facing so much criticism for admitting he knew little about Sacramento State.
“If anyone thinks Pat McAfee is a journalist, a college football insider, a reporter, you’re lost,” Traina asserted. “Pat McAfee is one thing and one thing only, an entertainer. That’s what Pat McAfee is. He is on that show to entertain. If you’re looking for him to break down X’s and O’s in college football in Sacramento State, I don’t know what you’re thinking.”

Traina also pointed out that analysts on other networks might not know much about Sacramento State either, arguing that McAfee was receiving too much criticism.

Although Traina defended McAfee, he acknowledged a different perspective raised by journalist Jemele Hill.
Hill pointed out that Sacramento State’s players and students might have been excited to see their program mentioned on College GameDay. Hearing a popular host admit that he knew nothing about the team could have felt dismissive, especially given how rarely smaller programs receive national attention.
Traina understood Hill’s argument; however, he maintained that McAfee’s comment was likely intended as a joke and questioned why it had generated such a strong reaction.
Sports broadcaster Tim Brando also offered a different perspective, arguing that McAfee should have handled the situation differently.
Brando wrote, “Age old lesson in sports television, don’t wonder aloud about what ya don’t know! So many media critics are afraid to critique @espn because they can’t lose their relationships with the PR people.”

He also reflected on how ESPN and College GameDay have evolved over the years, questioning whether the show’s growing popularity and extended coverage have come at the expense of quality.
While McAfee’s supporters see him as an entertainer who brings personality and humor to the broadcast, others feel College GameDay has a responsibility to represent the sport as a whole.
