Matt Reeves broke his silence after reports emerged about a major change to The Batman: Part II’s production. The director addressed concerns about his involvement in the film’s future on X (formerly Twitter).
Matt Reeves thanks Steven Soderbergh for stepping in to finish The Batman: Part II
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Soderbergh will step in to complete filming on The Batman: Part II. Matt Reeves will not return to set as he deals with a sensitive family matter. Soderbergh approached Reeves with the offer to help finish principal photography.
“Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” Reeves wrote on X. “I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes.”
Soderbergh will work from London while Reeves operates out of Los Angeles. Reeves plans to be more hands-on during the film’s post-production phase. The film is currently about two-thirds complete.

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh said in a statement. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”
Warner Bros. and DC Studios have rallied around Reeves during this period. He remains a key figure at the studio as a producer on Clayface and the HBO series The Penguin. The film still targets its February 18, 2028 release date.
This situation echoes past DC director changes. Zack Snyder stepped away from 2017’s Justice League due to a personal tragedy. Joss Whedon replaced him to finish that film. Richard Donner also faced a mid-production replacement on 1980’s Superman II.
Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne alongside new cast members Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan. Soderbergh, known for directing Ocean’s 11, Magic Mike and Traffic, brings significant experience to the project.
