A McDonald's customer has been left stunned after they saw the receipt for a meal from 2013 showing just how much prices have gone up.

The Missouri-based TikTok user, a woman who goes by the name Savvy on the app, found the receipt while cleaning her dad's shop. In the clip, she explains: "I was cleaning my dad's shop, and I found this McDonald's receipt."

She goes on to read the items it lists, including a quarter cheese meal with a large Coke for just $5.49. Nowadays, a Quarter Pounder with cheese combo meal costs around $10.69, although there is some change in prices depending on the location. Whoever the hungry historic customer was, also got themselves a two cheeseburger meal with a large coke at $4.89. In 2026 this costs more like $7.67.

Savvy mutters: "Wow," after seeing the two meals totted up to just $11.23. Other social media users quickly commented.

One wrote: "That was only [around] 10 years ago mind you... this is insanity."

Another reminisced: "Can't even get one meal there today for that price. Crazy. I miss the cheap days."

A third ranted about the state of modern America, writing: "Quality of food went down, price went up. Welcome to America."

Last month, McDonald’s said it will spend $8.5 billion over the next decade to modernize its restaurants globally.

Fast-food traffic in many markets, including the US, is flat, so for McDonald’s to continue to grow it has to grab share from competitors and improve restaurant productivity, McDonald’s Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski said at a meeting with investors at the company’s Chicago headquarters. McDonald’s wants to automate more tasks, like inventory and scheduling, and improve kitchen operations.

“The winners will be the companies that create more demand and deliver it more efficiently,” Kempczinski said.

McDonald’s shares fell nearly 5% Wednesday, their largest percentage drop since April 2025, as investors shuddered at the eye-popping price of improving McDonald’s 46,000 global stores.

On the product side, McDonald’s said hand-breaded chicken, which has rolled out at 10,000 restaurants in Asia and a handful of restaurants near Chicago, has boosted sales and quality ratings. Many of McDonald’s competitors, like Chick-fil-A and KFC, offer hand-breaded chicken. The company plans to expand its testing to more markets in the U.S. and Ireland next year.

McDonald’s also plans to introduce grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps in the U.S. and other markets and experiment with products like egg bites and bowls to meet the needs of customers who are seeking more protein and varied portion sizes.
