Tara Lipinski has shared a heartbreaking family update on her journey to have a second baby.

The Olympic gold medalist revealed on Friday that her surrogate recently experienced a pregnancy loss during the second trimester. Earlier that day, Lipinski had announced on the *Today* show that she was trying for another baby via surrogate.

"I didn’t think I was ready to share this yet," Lipinski began her post. "If you’re part of this community, you know how sharing in the moment can break you. Sometimes just writing it down or saying it aloud makes it feel that much more real. It takes so much to pick yourself up and start over- and keep pushing. Putting blinders on can sometimes feel a little easier and doing it publicly always feels daunting."

Lipinski decided to open up about her recent loss while returning home from Washington, D.C., where she had been advocating for IVF to be more accessible. "I realized I had to do it. I was tearing up reading so many messages from women sharing their vulnerable stories and fears, I just knew now is the time," she wrote.

"A few months ago, we lost our baby in the second trimester," Lipinski continued. "We’ve been on our second surrogacy journey for two years now. Our first surrogate, who carried Georgie, wasn’t medically cleared to proceed with our sibling journey. I grieved that ending and we started over. From the long road in finding a surrogate, to medical clearance setbacks, to a failed transfer, and now this loss… it hasn’t been an easy road."**

"I feel incredibly lucky for the woman who carried our baby (our angel) who will always hold such a special place in my heart," she added. "And for our first surrogate, who has continued to support me from afar through this second journey. We will forever be connected."

Lipinski and husband Todd Kapostasy welcomed their daughter, Georgie Winter, via surrogate in October 2023, following a five-year infertility journey that included four miscarriages and six failed IVF transfers.

The athlete wrote said the second trimester loss was "devastating" and is "something new to add to the long list of heartbreaks we’ve endured on this fertility journey."

She noted that this experience is "another memory that will be hard to erase," while adding that "her heart goes out to all the people who have experienced miscarriage, baby loss and stillbirth. You are warriors."

"Reading so many of your stories has reminded me how important it is to share—even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard," Lipinski said at the end of her post.**

Lipinski has been candid about using surrogacy, including detailing the challenging process in her podcast *Unexpecting*.

When asked in a previous interview with *Today *why she has not opted to adopt a child, Lipinski said she and her husband had “all these biological embryos sitting on ice” from years of IVF and opted to use them before going through the lengthy process of adopting.

“We weren’t going to take all our hard work and move to a different avenue,” Lipinski shared. “I was ready after all that trauma to use surrogacy and to move into a new phase of life."
