The Academy's Board of Governors announced a new round of eligibility rules ahead of the 99th annual Oscar ceremony in 2027
In acting categories, only work performed by humans with their consent will be considered eligible for the prizes
Per the Academy's press release, the org “reserves the right to request more information about the nature of the use and human authorship”
The Oscars are clarifying their rules around the use of artificial intelligence.
On Friday, May 1, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors announced an update to its requirements ahead of next year's 99th annual ceremony. Some of the changes involve making sure work made only by humans is eligible for the top cinema prizes.
In acting categories, per the Academy's press release, “only roles credited in the film's legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent will be considered eligible.”
The same went for screenwriting: “In the Writing categories, the rules codify that screenplays must be human-authored to be eligible.”

Making its stance on AI explicit, the org wrote that “regarding Generative Artificial Intelligence,” under its eligibility rules, “the Academy reserves the right to request more information about the nature of the use and human authorship.”

The Academy routinely makes changes to its rules and categories. An inaugural casting award was added to the Oscars this year, with the Academy Award going to Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another. For the 2028 ceremony, a best stunt design category will be introduced.
Announced in December was the Oscar ceremony's transition from ABC to YouTube starting in 2029, and this March, the organization announced it will also physically move from Hollywood's Dolby Theatre to AEG's sports and entertainment complex L.A. Live downtown the same year.
Also among newly announced rules is an update to the Oscar acting categories. A movie performer “may be nominated for multiple performances in the same category if those performances place in the top five votes,” per the Academy. Had this rule been in effect, for example, in 2008, Kate Winslet might have been nominated twice in the lead actress category for her Oscar-winning work in The Reader and the Golden Globe-winning Revolutionary Road.
There are also now two ways to submit a film to the Oscars' international feature category: as a country's official selection (as it has been), or via an Academy-approved selection committee if the film earned a qualifying award at an international film festival.
Following this year's Conan O'Brien-hosted ceremony, the 99th annual Oscars will take place on March 14, 2027.
