The Fray's Joe King wants fans to enjoy the band's shows however they see fit.
Earlier this month, The Fray closed out its How to Save a Life: The 20th Anniversary Tour at Smart Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines' capital city of Manila, and King dedicated the band's 2005 hit "Over My Head (Cable Car)" to a fan who was told by security to sit down earlier in the show.
"Manila, how we feeling? I would like to dedicate this song — ‘cause I can relate in many ways — but there’s been an incredible human being back here vibin’ to our music that has been standing up, and you’ve just been free and expressing your emotions," said the guitarist and vocalist, 45, per a video from the concert shared to Instagram.

He continued, "And then someone came up and they told him to sit down, and I’m sorry that you had to sit down. But if you want, you can stand up, and you can feel however you want to feel, and you can sing it however you want to sing it, ‘cause that’s what music does. It’s free to be however you want to be. It’s not contained, and you don’t have to sit down."
King encouraged fans to "sit down" or "stand up" for the show, telling attendees to "just be true" to themselves. "I want to dedicate this song to you, my friend back there. I’ve been there," he said.
"I’ve been the only one standing up. I’ve been the only one feeling like I’m left out, like I’m the outsider. That’s what this song is about," added King. "This song is about not feeling like you’re part of it. And somehow we are, ‘cause it’s all connected. We’re all connected tonight, and we’re grateful to be back in the Philippines singing this song 20 years later."
The tour celebrated The Fray's 2005 album How to Save a Life, which featured hits including its title track, "Over My Head (Cable Car)" and "Look After You."
In an interview with PEOPLE earlier this year, King said the success of "Over My Head (Cable Car)" altered the band's trajectory. "That really opened up so many doors for us. It changed our lives. That, first off, got us the record deal. Then we started playing out-of-state shows, and we started to build a fan base here and there through MySpace outside of Colorado," he said at the time.
"It propelled us into realms that we'd never imagined," added King.
The Fray also features lead guitarist Dave Welsh and drummer Ben Wysocki, and the band previously included original lead singer Isaac Slade, who departed in 2022.
Wysocki told PEOPLE new music is coming from the band. "Hell yeah, we're planning on releasing an album," he said. "We are in the works to finish up our fifth album, which will be coming out at the beginning of 2026."
