The Matrix 5 Still Alive as Drew Goddard Teases an Update — Will Keanu Reeves Return?

It’s been quite some time since we last heard an update on The Matrix 5. The last major development came in 2024, when Warner Bros. officially announced the film, stating that the fifth installment “will advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success.” That announcement arrived despite the reboot struggling at the box office, earning $160 million worldwide against a reported $190 million budget.

With fans largely assuming The Matrix 5 had been lost in development limbo, writer-director Drew Goddard has now offered a glimmer of hope. Goddard, whose upcoming film Project Hail Mary just hit the screens, recently confirmed that the fifth entry is “still in the works.”

But here’s the catch that has fans concerned. “I’m in my writing cave writing,” Goddard said to ScreenRant. “I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.” With no clear timeline in place, the next big – and worrying – question remains: will Keanu Reeves return?

While there has been no official confirmation of his return, Reeves previously expressed interest in reprising his role. In a 2021 interview with Empire, he admitted he still had more to give to the franchise. When asked about returning for a fifth film, he said, “If she [Lana Wachowski] invites me again, I’m in.”

It’s worth noting that Lana is now involved as an executive producer on the project, after serving as writer and director throughout the franchise’s earlier instalments.
