Whether it’s the climate or the time of year, cold weather can bring problems for drivers. Low temperatures plus snow or ice can mean extra strain on vehicles, with some potential issues costing a lot to fix.

But many of those costs are preventable with items that cost less than a fast food lunch. These low-cost winter essentials can protect everything from tires to windshield wipers when temperatures drop.

Tire Pressure Gauge -

Potential savings: $200 to $400 or more

Cold air reduces tire pressure quickly and driving on under-inflated tires can lead to uneven wear and a higher risk of blowouts. A basic pencil gauge can extend tire life and improve fuel efficiency, avoiding early replacement or roadside assistance costs. Amazon sells a tire pressure gauge for just over $5.

Windshield Ice Scraper -

Potential savings: $60 to $100 or more

Using credit cards or metal tools to clear ice can scratch the glass, but a simple scraper designed for the job protects the windshield while it clears. According to SellCarAdvisor.com, repairing a chipped windshield can cost into three figures and worst case scenario a chip can damage the integrity of the windshield, meaning an even more expensive replacement. Amazon has an ice scraper for just $2.59.

Old Socks -

Potential savings: $15 to $80 or more

Placing old socks over wipers at night prevents them from freezing to the windshield. It can help avoid wiper damage or having to chip ice off the blades in the morning, which can save a small but real repair or replacement cost, per SellCarAdvisor.com.

Kitty Litter or Sand -

Potential savings: $75 to $125 or more

Drivers with a family cat can grab a handful or two of fresh litter and keep it in the trunk for traction on ice or packed snow. Dollar Tree has a 5-pound bag of cat litter for $1.50. For pet-free households, any sand from garden or home improvement projects can be used. That added grip may be enough to avoid a tow truck bill, according to A4 AutoTransport.

All Season Windshield Washer Fluid -

Potential savings: $25 to $350 or more

Standard fluid can freeze in extreme cold, blocking spray and reducing visibility. Winter rated fluid prevents frozen lines and helps clear salt and grime. As well as helping to protect wipers and windshields against damage, it could avoid the risk of accidents and fines in many states. Walmart has a gallon of this fluid for $4.97.
