Known for portraying strong women who defy social norms, Kathy Bates, an American actress of stage, screen, and television.

Bates studied theater at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, moved to New York in 1970, where she started acting in small stage roles and took many side gigs to support herself financially.During the late ’70s and the ’80s, Bates appeared in theater and film productions like Crimes of the Heart and ’Night, Mother.

With the 1990 Annie Wilkes in Misery (1990), based on the popular Stephen King novel, Bates got herself the Best Actress Oscar and a Golden Globe, becoming the first woman to win that award for a horror or thriller film.Following Misery, Kathy has acted in numerous other films, in comedy and drama categories. In 1991, she played a gentle Southern housewife in Fried Green Tomatoes. Molly Brown in Titanic, an idealistic political worker in Primary Colors, which earned her another Oscar nomination.Kathy’s success was also seen on television. She won an Emmy for her guest role on Two and a Half Men and another for playing the evil Madame LaLaurie in American Horror Story: Coven.Beyond acting, Kathy directed several episodes of Six Feet Under, the HBO drama.Away from the screen, Kathy successfully battled both ovarian cancer and breast cancer. After experiencing lymphedema from a double mastectomy, she became an honorary board chairperson for the Lymphatic Education & Research Network.Kathy nearly quit acting after a recent film role. She said, “There was a film that I cared deeply about that, when I saw how it turned out, really broke my heart”. Recently, she took on the leading role in the TV series Matlock.
